Prayer: Leadership

God of all ages

—of yesterday, today, and tomorrow—

you raise up great leaders in every age

so that your people might be guided

through the trials and travails of this life.

You established a holy nation

by creating a covenant with Abraham and Sarah,

promising that their descendants

would be as numerous as the stars in the night sky.

When Israel was in bondage,

you raised up for us Moses, Miriam, and Aaron

to be lawgivers, prophets, and priests,

the deliverers of your people from Egypt

and into the Promised Land of milk and honey..

You sent the prophets

Isaiah, Micah, and Amos

to preach justice to your lost people,

restoring the dignity of Israel

and safe-guarding the Covenant.

When you were preparing to enter into the world

and pitch your tent among us,

you brought forth Mary,

who would become your Mother and ours,

and called her to sing of true, earth-shattering justice.

In the fullness of time,

you sent your Word, Jesus who is Christ,

into the world to take on our flesh

and show us the depth and breadth

of your saving love.

[When your Church was rife with division

and the people no longer knew you,

you sent Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal

to call all Christians back to you

and remind them of their dignity and holiness.]

No longer able to abide your children living in slavery,

you raised up Martin, Rosa, Malcom, Sojourner, Frederick

and countless other prophets, sages, activists, and leaders

to call your people into the light of truth

and the tender embrace of justice.

Continue to raise up for us, O Liberating One,

prophets, priests, pastors, leaders, and shepherds

to guide your people into the new and brilliant future

which rests in the loving palm of your almighty hand.

We make this prayer through the same Jesus,

son of Mary, brother of the poor,

father of the orphaned, lover of peacemakers,

who lives and reigns with you and your Holy Spirit,

one God in forever and ever. Amen.
